A raw diet can have many benefits for your pet including a healthier coat. Many pet owners find that skin issues improve with a raw diet, which may have been caused by allergies to corn, wheat, soy or other grains that are used in dry pet food preparations. Raw salmon has omega 3 oils which are often recommended by vets to improve skin conditions. Choosing a raw diet can also decrease inflammation and improve their immune system.

If you haven’t already considered a raw diet for your dog or cat, you may have some questions about the benefit of a raw food diet. Here is some information you may find helpful. Remember it’s always important to discuss any dietary concerns you have with your vet.
As a carnivore, your pet has all of the enzymes necessary for digesting raw food. What they lack however, are the enzymes and bacteria naturally found in omnivores which make it possible to break down starchy foods and carbohydrates (ie. many types of dry pet food!). Animals on a raw diet often maintain a healthier weight with regular bowel activity that has less odour.

Serving Up SeaSmacks
Ready to introduce your pet to a SeaSmacks raw salmon diet? Here are a few question and answers regarding food handling, portion recommendations and how to best handle frozen food.
Don’t serve them frozen! The best way to serve SeaSmacks is to take out portions and thaw in a sealed container in the fridge. SeaSmacks can be left in the fridge for up to 3 days. For quicker thawing, place your daily portion in a water-tight, freezer proof bag and place in a bowl of cold water for approximately 30 minutes or until thawed.
Raw food is always consumed in lower quantities than dry food. In normal conditions, you want to serve SeaSmacks anywhere from 2-3% of your adult dog or cat’s weight daily. Puppies and kittens can consume anywhere from 5-8% of their weight daily. Adults usually like 2 meals per day and the young ones like to eat more so try 3-4 times per day. The portion sizes vary according to the dog’s activity level, health, metabolism so always factor these into daily feeds.
Keep SeaSmacks frozen until you prepare to serve portions to your pet. Thawed food should be kept in the refrigerator up to 3 days. Keep separate from other foods. Wash all bowls and utensils with HOT, soapy water after use. Ensure that all surfaces, including hands are washed with hot, soapy water after coming in contact with raw food.

You may notice that your pet has looser stools than normal, or even mild vomiting in the transitory phase from dry food. This is a normal process and is usually temporary. Raw diets use less bile to break down food in the stomach than dry food diets. There will be an adjustment period where bile production slows down to match the needs of the raw diet. Offer occasional dry biscuits if bile is being overproduced but you only need to do that for a very short period of time, a few days should do the trick.
